Wild About Marie will be the one to beat in the Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill Downs
The 5-year-old mare, Wild About Marie, who has primarily raced at Keeneland and Fair Grounds Race Course, and only raced twice at Churchill Downs in her entire career, that too without much luck, will return to the venue for the third time in the $68,000
Unbridled Sidney Stakes, where she will try to atone for her defeat in her previous start.
Bouncing back off of a defeat is a crucial part of a racing horse and his/her career – which mainly goes on to define the horse’s character and the will to thrive when the chips are down.
Wild About Marie is going through exactly that, while the turf at Churchill Downs could prove to be a handful if it rains, as it previously did on the Derby Trial day with the added miser of a hail storm.
If nature decided to keep it sunny at the Churchill Downs, there will be few who will have a case against Wild About Marie, as she try to redeem herself after an eighth place finish in the Giant’s Causeway Stakes over at Keeneland’s turf course.
Ike and Dawn Thrash’s Wild About Marie went over a distance of five and a half furlongs on 21 April, 2012, at the back of a second place finish in the Pan Zareta Stakes to winner Inspired, but at Keeneland a trouble eighth was too much for trainer Jeffrey
D. Thornbury to take down.
It was a rugged race, but Wild About Marie was the third choice at 9 to 2, however, this time around she will be the one to beat in a field of 10.
“It seems like a lighter bunch than what we faced in the Giant’s Causeway, although this is competitive enough,” said Jeff Thornbury, trainer of Wild About Marie. “We missed our prep at the Fair Grounds when it got rained off the turf, so it was three months
between races for her, and she might have needed that last one. She needs to run as opposed to me trying to train her too hard. I really think that with that race under her, she’ll be tough Saturday.”
Wildcat Heir mare has had three starts the new campaign, and she only managed a single win out of the three, and that too in a maiden/optional/claimer at Fair Grounds.
