Wild Card Race: St. Louis Cardinals strategise – MLB Playoffs
As the race for National League Wild Card gathers pace, the St. Louis Cardinals are flexing their muscles for a relatively forceful show. Trailing by one game against the Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals have staged an intensive pursuit to come out
ahead and win the Wild Card.
However, the Cardinals were shocked on Monday, September 26 as the Houston Astros were able to take an impressive 5-4 victory over them. This caused disappointment that the team wants to rid sooner than later.
The outcome was something that the team manager La Russa could only swallow as a bitter pill. "We've played every game like it's the last game for so long now, guys enjoy it," Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa said.
Nonetheless, he positively thinks that the team has so far performed as was anticipated. With the Cardinals putting up a great show in every game they face as there is some tough competition ahead.
Were the Atlanta Braves to win and the Cardinals lose, St. Louis shall be eliminated from the post-season competition. Thus, with the playoff temperature running high, it is almost do-or-die for the Cardinals.
The resistance that the St. Louis Cardinals put in the last game against the Astros was remarkable. Having lost only by a margin of one run, the Cardinals tried until the end to gain an edge, but luck was not on their side. The team was not only shocked
by the loss, but they were more disappointed than anything.
"It's a great way to go about it. Wish we could do it for 162, but you can't,” St. Louis Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa said. “There will be absolutely nothing different about tomorrow."
Lance Berkman knows what could have been one of the reasons why they lost to the Astros. Having remained a part of the team in the past, Berkman knew that the Astros had the potential to shock the Cardinals with an unexpected surprise in the game.
"They're not going to just lay down because we're battling for a playoff spot, and they're not," said Cardinals out-fielder Lance Berkman, who spent almost 12 seasons with Houston. "They're going to play us tough."
With the challenges mounting and the St. Louis Cardinals all disposed to embrace them, there is an opportunity for them to realise their dream of winning the Wild Card. It will be interesting to see the Cardinals battle it out with their aggressive offence
and try to dominate for the Wild Card spot in the post-season.
The team is loaded with talent and confidence, as they have had a remarkable regular season so far. The Cardinals will be looking to continue their winning momentum and make it to the playoffs for a chance to go after the coveted World Series title.
