Wild annual seeds survive the winter, but 'packaged' annual seeds must wait until danger of frost has past??

I understand that seedlings can't withstand a hard freeze after they've begun to grow, but how is it that annual seeds which drop naturally to the ground in the fall manage to survive the winter and come up without any problem?

  1. wild seeds are native to the area and genetically programed to live in that environment. But if a really bad freeze hits in the spring many of them probably die off, then more seeds sprout  later to replace them.
