Wild camping in Southern Ireland?

Is it possible to go wild camping in Ireland.

Are there any restrictions ?

Obviously asking landowners permission where possible and respecting nature etc etc

Has any one done it before and how did you get on?

  1. Well first no country exists called “Southern Ireland”. The country is called just plain old Ireland (you can go ahead & call it the Republic of Ireland either). The south is a geographical area of the country, nothing got to do with the name of a country. Where the confusion probably is arising here is because there is a country called Northern Ireland.

Think of it like this: in the USA there is West Virginia & another state called Virginia not  East Virginia. In Ireland there is a county called West Meath & also a county called Meath again not East Meath. So you see, much like calling these places “East …..” calling the country Southern Ireland is just plain incorrect & wrong!

As to the camping question, yeah just make sure to ask the land owners permission (now how you figure out who owns the land you want to camp on is an entirely different matter! :-) )

  2. Ive never actually done it but you've got it exactly right just be careful where you go and get permission when you can!!!

    Enjoy

  3. I'm actually tired of typing this but there is no such country as Southern Ireland.  We live in the Republic of Ireland.

You used to be able to camp anywhere and to a certain extent you still can.  Of course you need to ask permission as there have been a few cases of landowners being sued so they are now not as happy to give permission to people as formerly.  However, you will find lots of places to camp, I've done it myself.

  4. It is - just make sure if you are camping on farmland that you get the landowners permission - due to fears of litigation, some landowners are a bit paranoid about letting people onto their holdings, but most people will have no problem. There are some great places around Killarney, Dingle, and west Cork. Enjoy yourself!
