Wildcard Ji-Young Kim expels Ha-Young Ji in qualifying 1st round – Hansol Korea Open 2011
Wildcard entrant Ji-Young Kim ousted unseeded Ha-Young Ji in the qualifying first round of the Hansol Korea Open on outdoor hard courts of the Olympic Tennis Courts in Seoul, South Korea on the 17th of September 2011. After one hour and twenty minutes of play Kim won in straight sets of 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Opening the initial set of the match was Ji and the two players held their serve for the first two games. However, in the third game Kim was first to capitalize on a mini break, but Ji was not ready to give up as yet and broke back in the very next game to even the score at 2-2.
During the fifth and sixth game the players won on alternate serves and again tied the score to 3-3. However, in the last three games, Ji was broken on her service games by Kim, who eventually snatched the opening set away from Ji to score off a 6-3 victory.
Although, neither of the players had smashed an ace, they had displayed a tremendous effort full of backhand shots and winners. With a difference of eight points, Kim was now one up over her opponent.
Opening the set was Kim, who clinched a game on her serve and then went on to breaking her opponent in the second to take a mini lead of 2-0.
However, Ji was not to let Kim take the lead and broke back in the following game and by holding her serve in the fourth game equalized the score at 2-2.
Kim took another mini lead when she held her serve in the fifth game and broke her opponent again in the sixth game to hold her lead at 4-2.
At this point, Kim had taken a notch higher in her power play and with two breaks up was looking to completely destroy her adversary by breaking her for the third time and as she broke her opponent for the last time she secured her victory in the sixth game.
Ji-Young Kim was the first wildcard entrant of the qualifying match to defeat another player, she was able to reserve a spot in the second qualifying round.
