Wildcard Laura Robson ousts Alexandra Dulgheru in 1st round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011
British wildcard entrant Laura Robson ousted Romaine Alexandra Dulgheru in the opening draw of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2011. After duelling for just sixty six minutes on outdoor hard courts of the Ariake Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan,
the British teenager put her wild card to use by knocking out world number 59 Dulgheru, winning 6-2, 6-2 on the Sunday the 25th of September.
Standing to open the first set was the Briton, who won the service pitch. Serving for the first game, she rolled the scoreboard winning, 1-0. Capitalizing on an early break in the second game and by holding her own in the third,
she was leading with a 3-0. Robson was on a roll as she again broke Dulgheru for the second time to further increase the gap to 4-love.
Dulgheru tried to make a comeback in the fifth game by breaking Robson back in the very next game but it was a brief victory as she was still two breaks and a game up. The contesters held serve for the following two games.
By the end of the eighth game the scoreboard read at 5-3 for Robson, who was now looking to break her adversary for the final time and reel of a 6-3 victory. As Dulgheru served she faulted and then double faulted to endorse Robson
with a deftly win.
Although, Robson had targeted only 43 percent of her first serves, she won a walloping 69 percent of her first serves. Benefitting from the breakpoints won, she then conquered the set with a difference of 12 points in total set
points won.
Inaugurating the second set was again Robson and again she held serve in the opening game and moved the scoreboard to a 1-0. Trailing right behind her was Dulgheru, who won the second game and the score was levelled at 1-1.
Relatively, Robson stands at world number 146, which of course is nothing compared to the Romaine, who stands at world number 59. Robson broke first in the third game and wanted to capitalize on the mini break but the Romaine was
not ready to be put to shame by a wildcard entrant and broke back to win her second game of the set.
After that Dulgheru could not come up with any more tricks and fell short to the Briton. As the wildcard entrant held her serve in the eighth game, she was now looking forward for a double fault from her rival. Although, Dulgheru
didn’t double fault, she ended up throwing her crosscourt forehand long and erred giving away the set and the match.
