  1. I presume you are using a long lens with f3.5 as the widest aperture.

    1) use a tripod, whenever you see wildlife photographers on TV you nearly always see them with a tripod.

    2) Use the rule shutter speed = 1/ focal length e.g for a 300mm lens set your shutter speed to 1/300 th of a second, that should be fast enough to stop camera shake. Good camera technique can dramatically reduce this even further. Lean against a solid object, I mean really lean, place your feet a couple of feet from the object and lean all your weight on it, this stops side to side movement. Cradle under the lens with your left hand and hold the camera with your right, really tuck your elbows into your chest. This forms a triangle of the camera your forearms and your torso which is very stable and stops up and down movement. Take a breath and hold it - release the shutter, with practice this technique will have you using a 500mm lens at 1/60th of a second with no sign of camera shake.

    3) Expensive option, buy an f2.8 telephoto, they are big and heavy (which helps with stability), but have a lot of advantages. Being expensive they fall into the lens manufacturers 'professional' range which means matched lenses, great build quality, superb image quality and rear focusing which means they focus in the blink of an eye. Because of the narrow depth of field these lenses have when used wide open they make great portrait lenses, isolating the subject from the background.

  2. Your shutter speed is too fast.  bring it down.  The faster the shutter the less light that will be let in.  1/1000 is not slow by any means.

if your aperture is at 3.5 that is very wide so lots of light will be let in BUT your shutter speed is too fast at 1/1000 bring it down a bit.  Your camera should have a little scale that will help you get the settings right.
