Question:

Will 2 RCA audio extensions make audio worse.?

I just recentely bought a new 5.1 speaker system. The Logitech X-540's to be exact. Not the best but great for the price. Anyways, the cables that come on the speakers are very short. About 4-5 feet for the front speakers and about 14 feet for the rear. I am mounting them on the wall so I need longer cables so I bought some 10 ft. extensions. If I connect two extensions on the same cable will I lose sound quality(two extensions connected to each rear would make it about 34 feet). If so, will it be enough that it will be noticable? I'm guessing not much if any loss for the front speakers but I'm afraid the rear speakers will lose some quality in audio.

  1. It will probably work ok and you may not notice any difference in sound quality.  The amplifier will have to work a bit harder to produce the same volume level that you would have with shorter wires because the extra wire adds resistance.

I always prefer to use heavier gauge speaker wire for my stereos and home theater setups.  For that long of a run, I would get some cheap 18 or 16 gauge two conductor wire and then just splice or solder the RCA connectors on each end.  To splice the connectors, just cut off the connector a few inches from the end and strip the wires and use wire nuts or crimps and electrical tape to attach it to the wire.

  2. No, you won't lose sound quality that's audible to your ears. To be even more precise, the Logitech drivers aren't accurate enough that you can hear any sound quality loss at all, so it's the same as you not hearing any loss of sound quality. As for the cable degrading your setup, that won't happen either. The resistance of the wire is VERY little, to a point where it's fine to say zero according to a person's ear, unless they added a inline resistor, which is usually not the case at all. Only issue with more connections is that it's prone to come loose at some point, which then you would have to go and reconnect it. Why a 10 footer if I might ask? You can get a 25 footer easily and for VERY cheap here:
