Question:

Will 2 strange parakeets get along in the same cage?

We have one parakeet all by itself. I'm thinking it needs a friend... if I get another bird who lives alone also, will they get along together? Someone is giving theirs away because they are moving cross country, and it lives alone too. So I figured they could be buddies. Do you think 2 solo birds will get along together? I want to get some opinions before I commit to anything and tell her I want it.

Thanks!

  1. People make it seem like the parakeets are going to die if they see another parakeet after its been by itself with humans only. No, they will get along and no you don't need another cage, it's waste of money. Birds are not like humans. If birds could be only with birds, they would, but they don't have a say in any of this. So once again, yes they will get along and another thing, if you have a strong relationship with your first bird than don't worry the keet will still love you the same. I had 2parakeets to start out with than got 2 more and my first 2 always loved me the same. They would fly on my should while i would watch t.v. or doodle on my notebook. One of them died sadly and i miss him so much but my point is, if you love your keet, your keet loves you too. That won't change but your keet might want to spend more time with the other keet because they can communicate.

  2. It's best to give them some time to get used to each other before plopping them into the same cage together. Keep them in separate cages nest to each other first. After a few days, or even a week, of letting them get acquainted with each other from separate cages, you can introduce them in the same cage. Just make sure you keep and eye on them for the first few hours, and two or three days after to make sure they're not fighting and whatnot.

  3. My sister got a parakeet in april and it was all by itself and in june she got another one for it and they won't leave each other's side now. when she takes one out of the cage the other goes crazy. It only took about half a day for them to like each other. also you can go to www.petco.com to get more info. Goodluck.

  4. it would if they comunicate with each other but they wont kill each other in the cage so dont worry

  5. they will get along eventually

  6. well i think so .but its a fifty-fifty percent because i too had a bunch of them all of them died 1by 1 .the last one left live longer all alone.who ever came in his cage would get murdered in fewdays but it depends INNhis behavior if he is looking excited he might make a friend

  7. yes they will get along eventually they are very sociable animals

  8. Hmm good question

My friend once had a bird, maybe not a parakeet, but it was similar (i think :P)  He had two, but got them at the same time, so i think they didnt mind

I think, however, that it depends entirely on how old the first bird is. If he is older by a considerable amount to the second, then they may not get along because the new one will be a lot more energetic, and may "annoy" the other bird

If they are close in age, i think its ok :)

    Good luck

  9. Yeah, parakeets are very social animals. I felt really bad for my parakeet when she was alone, and over time I've acquired four parakeets. They all seem to get along fine. Also, if you only have one, it's going to require a lot more attention from people, as parakeets are so social. But if you have two or more, it doesn't need as much attention. The only problem with getting another parakeet is that your first may not be as friendly anymore. That's what happened with mine when I got a second; the first one, not really needing human company anymore, kind of stopped liking to be held. But I think that's a really good idea, for the bird's sake.

  10. I think so. It might turn out great but it may fall through. Its like two people becoming step siblings, you know what I mean.

  11. try and see.

  12. I would watch them for a while and see how they react then put them in. But they should. They are generally social and nice birds. (:
