Will it work if the gnomon is a right angle with the degrees away from the equator still away from the dial

  1. One edge of the gnomon must be parallel to the Earth's axis. The shadow of that edge falls on the calibration marks for the hours. The rest of the gnomon is irrelevant, but it often has a vertical edge which forms a right angle with a horizontal plate.
