  1. God I hope not. I don't want some computer controlling the air space. You never know if it could be wrong.

  2. No.

  3. no way

  4. ATC ? no... will it be totally automated? No...  Hopefully it will be improved... but....  with the coming of the VLJ's (very light jets)  ATC is going to experience a new problem in that there will be a significant increase in traffic above 250... which is something they really didn't need.

These new little guys are fast... but they are not as fast as the larger corp jets and most of the aircarriers... so they are going to be difficult to blend in the flow, and with the price tag and fuel economy they are offering (jet cruise and reasonable range for Navajo fuel burn) they should become very popular. Add to that you can takeoff and land at private and smaller airports from FBOs and you take the security hassle out of the equation they become even more attractive.

  5. I think some form of management will be in place, but it is a fact that the current airway/management system dates back to the 50's.  The airways themselves are relics of the airmail routes of the 20's.  The current system just cannot handle the amount of traffic currently-and no way will it be able to handle the projected increases in private/bizjet travel over the next decade.  Finally, it really doesn't allow for the use of UAVs, which will also increase in the coming decades.  Off my soapbox :)

  6. It might be reduced from what it is today, but that will be very gradual as new technology is implemented into the system. The FAA doesn't rush into anything so don't worry about ATC going away that soon.

  7. No, you can't just have total chaos up there.  There will always be an ATC system in place.  Now if you mean will human air traffic controllers be obsolete, well, maybe one day, but probably not in any of our lifetimes.  Even when that day comes, there will still be a need for humans to watch over things.  The FAA, like all government organizations, is very slow to adopt new technology.  The only thing the new light business jets will do is cause more holding patterns and delays at airports.

  8. like the mantra that dog fighting is going out of style because of missiles, the pun-dents that suggest that air traffic control is becoming obsolete are wrong. in fact air traffic controllers are going to be as busy in the future as they are today, but they will have technology advancements that will ease their work load. but in the end, humans will still have the final say, and the final responsibility.
