Will Amir Khan’s haste and fury cost him the rematch against Peterson? – Boxing Special
British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan has been furious over the controversial decision that had cost him his IBF and WBA super lightweight titles against Lamont Peterson in December last year.
Since then, the former champion made it a mark to get an immediate rematch or get the decision reversed. The IBF, in its proceedings, said that there were several irregularities throughout the fight and therefore the committee order a rematch.
What is amusing about all this is the fact that Khan has not yet accepted his defeat. He still believes that he is better than Lamont Peterson is. Khan has been making media statements showing how angry he is and how desperately he wants to beat Peterson.
If he thinks Peterson will be intimidated with such efforts then probably Khan is on the wrong side of the road. Peterson has been showing his composure and has clearly said that he can die in the ring than lose. Both fighters are highly confident but Khan
is a bit overboard, which is something to be worried about, for his fans and mates.
Recently, through his twitter account Khan claimed that he still is the former unified WBA (Super) & IBF Light Welterweight Champion after the WBA reinstated him last week. The WBA immediately released a statement saying that Khan has not been reinstated
and Peterson is still the champion. The WBA also said that the only way Khan can regain his titles is by beating Peterson in the ring.
Khan also made it an effort to boast about his training sessions. In his recent media interaction, he said, “I have to win this. I will train hard. This village I’m going to, it’s very isolated, very quiet, few cars. It is at altitude so you do one round
in the ring and you feel your chest burning. I’ll do my running with Manny (Pacquiao) — we’ll be running above the clouds. I’ve done it before and stayed in a five-star hotel. This time I want it basic, hard floors, cold showers. It’s a proper Ninja camp.
I’m going to work hard — I want to be in the best condition to get my belts back. I’m going in there to knock him out and hurt him.”
By working out with Manny Pacquiao, Khan definitely will learn a thing or two. However, if he is of the view that Peterson is enjoying his days then he is being unrealistic. Peterson has said time and again that Khan is no longer the champion and he needs
to accept it, which seems to be a tough task for Khan.
In his recent interview, Peterson said, “To me, he has to accept he's not the champ any more. He's said many times he'll train like a challenger. You are the challenger, so you will train like a challenger. To me, he just hasn't accepted it yet. But he'll
have to because he can't go in the record books and change the loss to a victory.”
While confidence is good, Khan’s ‘over the edge confidence’ seems a bit disturbing. It is more as if Khan is disturbed over what happened and he is trying to prove to the world that he is the better man by releasing such media statements. Probably he is
trying to convince his fans or everyone out there to take him as the champion.
