Question:

Will Apple ever make cheaper low end computers?

I guess technically most Apple computers are low-end, as far as specs go, but most of their hardware is top notch. Will they ever use cheaper parts to bring down the cost? Because right now the cheapest Mac is the Mini at $600, which excludes the monitor.

Also, do you think they will ever release Mac OS to work on regular non-Mac PCs? I'd like to see how it works without being on a Mac or using a Hackintosh.

Thank You.

  1. I doubt you'll see anything much cheaper than the mini. Certainly nothing below the $500 mark. And why should they? They sold 2.5 million computers last quarter and that number is climbing quickly—faster than most PC mfrs—and all while their cheapest laptop offering costs twice as much as many other mfrs cheapest offering. Everybody's got their own Apple criticisms, but when you see their numbers every quarter it's clear that they're smoking the competition without ever bowing to those critics.

And I seriously doubt they would ever release OS X for generic motherboards. Apple is a hardware company, and the #1 feature that makes their hardware better than any other hardware company is that it runs OS X. All the other specs are the same. Without OS X they wouldn't sell jack!

[at some other user: Picasa works just fine on Mac, if that's your bag.]

  2. i don't think that will happen

  3. Market forces might drive the price of a Mini down, but not any time soon.  Apple is experiencing higher sales than projected because of so many people being afraid of Vista.  Good sales = high prices sometimes.  Why lower them?

I considered a Mini, but went with a PC simply because I was able to find so much better performance (for my needs) at almost half the price.  Also, I already have a bunch of software that can't be used on the Mac, so I'd have to buy it all over again.  I also love Picasa for organizing my photo files, and it isn't available for Mac at all.

And I doubt you'll see Mac's OS X on anything but a Mac for a long long time.  Mac likes to make the whole shebang and keep the quality up.

  4. GO FOR  to Lenovo Y510 Laptop -

  5. If you tie two wet cats together in a bag you have a god idea of how MAC and PC get along. Just get a good, compatiblee, PC and move on.
