  1. No one hit the main points.

    1. Disc Cost

Blu Ray's cost 2-3 times more than DVDs. The cost of the Blu Ray player will become irrelevent if the Blu Ray disc price is competitive with the cost of a DVD.

    2. Time

High Speed on-demand downloads are coming. If Blu-Ray doesn't reach saturation prior to the widespread availability of High Speed High Definition downloads, Blu Ray is doomed.

I think that the cost of the discs will come down eventually. Something is telling me it won't be in time to beat downloads and that will limit the saturation Blu Ray will achieve. My guess is it won't get as popular as DVD was but it will have a substantial following.

  2. This is a really tricky question. We dont' really know Sony's sales on Blu-ray players after the defeat of HD-DVD because it happened a few weeks into the 1st quarter. So we don't know how many blu-ray units and dvds were sold. In my opinion, people have bought hdtvs for more then one reason and Hollywood is now prepared if the consumer wants to move on to a new format. But the main problem is that we're in a recession and gas won't be getting any cheaper for a while so I dont see the average consumer going out and buying a 300 dollar player. If u really want a blu-ray player without taking a risk, then I suggest getting a PS3 (if you're a gamer). Metal Gear Solid 4- Guns of the Patriots just came out and it's a game of the year contender along with Grand Theft Auto 4. So all in all, even though all my points are against blu-ray becoming mainstream, I think it will become a dominant player in the next 3-5 years. After the recession is over and the energy crisis is solved, the consumer will have their bucket full of money and spend it.

  3. It depends on how you mean. If you mean as a movie format, that depends on whether HD becomes standard for over 50% of the population. As it is, probably only around 45% (at the most) of people have an HD t.v. When it hits well over 50% (probably not even until around 60%-80%), then yes, Blu Ray will become the standard for distribution of movies.

If you are refering to its use as a data storage medium, even CDs have not disappeared as of yet, DVD's have yet to become ~the~ standard for that, so Blu Ray is still a long ~long~ way off from being the standard for data storage.

But that said, it will happen. Just not right away.

  4. Yes it will. As HD-DVD is a now officially reached "End Of Life," the next best thing is BD (BluRay Disc). This will eventually replace DVD because of its High Definition Video and Data storage capability. Its eventually going to do what DVD did to VHS and Video CDs. The nice thing about BluRay though is that it is backward capable, which means you should still be able to play your regular DVDs on it.

  5. Yes.  Blu-ray already accounts for 7% of the weekly movie sales according to the Nielson Videos-can survey.  As Blu-ray hardware prices drop market share will increase.  I expect to see a bunch of sub $200 players this holiday season.  Most new releases are available in Blu-ray and more catalog titles are being added all the time.  I don't expect HD movies downloads to become widely accepted for 3-4 years.  At that time Blu-ray players will cost the same as DVD players do today.
