Will Blu-Ray movies look better than DVD on a SD tv?

I have a really crappy SD TV (really want a HD) but i want to go buy National Treasure 2, i have a PS3 and was wondering if i bought it on Blu-Ray if it would look better than buying on DVD since its not an HD TV?

It might, but it depends on your TV.  Many people will disagree, but the fact is the resolution is not the sole factor in high-definition.  There are other factors, as well such as contrast, saturation, color depth (which tube sets are unmatched so far - editing studios still use CRT sets for reference).

    A coworker took home a DMPBD30 for testing and connected it via composite to his standard definition tube set and he said the quality was much better than DVD.  Personally, I've never watched a blu-ray on a standard definition set, but from what I know about HD and blu-ray technology I have no doubt this is true.


  2. No, that would be a complete waste of money. The highest resolution you could get out of that blu-ray would be 480p, which if yu're using your ps3 to play DVDs as well will show a normal DVD as 480p. To get the full benefit of Blu-ray, you need to have a 1080p HDTV. Needless to say, you can still buy blu-rays and watch them on your tv...however you'll be paying almost double the price of a DVD for pretty much the exact same picture quality. Save yourself some money, and just get the standard DVD.
