Is there any wonder why USA is now rapidly losing lead in scientific advancement?

  1. The guy is out on publicity only: he tried to stop RHIC at BNL in 2001 as well, for similar reasons, but the suit was thrown out of court. He probably couldn't recognize a black hole if it *fell* on him.

    George N:

money spend on fundamental research serves at developing technology.

Ever heard of Charpak's wire chambers? Developed as particle detectors they were soon adopted in medical research.

Ever heard of the World Wide Web? The initial idea was invented at CERN to be used to keep track of the millions of drawings for LHC. Now used by *everybody* on Earth...

  2. This kind of science is very expensive and has a very bleak payback picture.  What practical use is there for such a beast?  It can only verify some theories of high-energy physics, which is interesting, but doesn't look like it is going to lead to anything useful.  Basically it's an academic luxury.

That's why the SCC in the US was dropped.  Really the only thing it would do is create local construction jobs.  As far as real science goes, there wasn't much to accomplish.

There are much more productive research projects out there that need the money....projects that could actually improve the quality of life on earth.

  3. I wouldn't put it past Bush...I shall not answer the latter part of the question, because we ALL know the answer to it, and it doesn't need to be repeated

  4. Basic Research is Not Valued In this Country, Which is too Bad, e. g. this Government Canned the Superconducting Supercollider (Sp?), Stem Cell Research, I Just Heard an Ad for the Scam "Prefer On".  We Seem to Have a Endless Supply of Money for War.  A Matter of Priorities I Suppose.

EDIT: George N's Thoughts are Far too Common.

  5. Why, exactly, does a regional court in Hawaii have jurisdiction over CERN? Why do they even need to show up, to defend themselves against complaints which are truly idiotic, in a court which has no jurisdiction?

A fool and his money are soon parted.....
