In Yucatan they were worried about it in 2004, because of the Mars rover pictures.

2012 and the 'Mayan calendar' hadn't become an issue yet in 2004.

Will the History Channel episodes about the Mayan Calendar and 2012 bring more unwelcome company to Yucatan?

  1. Who knows what garbage the history channel will run in the name of ratings.

Whats more who knows how many people will believe it.

I really can't wait to find out though.

I think there are a lot of people that just enjoy a good end of the world countdown every few years. Thats why the Jehovah Witnesses are so successful.

  2. >never know. I have a feeling that 12-21-12 will be a very interesting moment in history for sure. I have know about the date thing for years now. I dont know if they will be congregating there, or hunkering down in the bomb shelters?

  3. Hard to say but I suggest we show as many people the article as possible. Personally I would rather spend my money on something else than supporting close minded people like in the article.  Let's help them out and simply stop visiting them at all and eliminate all tourism to the site and their country. Then the surviving Mayans will have the author to thank for their impressive growing economic conditions.

Edit: This suggest that you or anyone else knows the reality. Certainly the place is real. I agree that the "alien" connection is unlikely or at least unsupported so far.

However, history is at best a reconstructed guess as to it's reality. People could enjoy the place while suspending judgment on everything until they look into it.

  4. Yes, I think it will.

Wow, the loony legacy of Von Daniken still lives on. I had no idea it was so fervent there. I agree with the author how this nuttiness devalues the very human achievements of the Mayans. I doubt these very short-lived pulses of end-of-the-world hysteria add much to the long-term local economy (the author of the article is an economist). The Yucatan will always have its steady tourist trade.
