  1. China has changed enormously in a very short time.  Individuals are allowed to own property, to start businesses, to travel abroad, to move to the city, to wear what they want, to surf the internet.  These are all huge changes.  And the forces that are in motion will not be contained.  China will continue to change at a breathtaking pace.  Stay tuned.

  2. That decision was bloody awfull, the poor girl rejected by a heartless politician, shame on him.

  3. That is a profound question.

I have read--alas only in translation--lots of Chinese literature and history.  Some of what goes on in China 2008 could be lifted right out of short stories written eight hundred years ago, particularly the rigid enforcement of hierarchy, the sweeping aside of the concerns of the average citizen, and the desire for "face" in the eyes of the world.  So I wonder how much of Chinese behavior we can attribute to the current government and how much is rooted in traditional culture.

  4. This isn't just China, it happens in Hollywood all the time. Unfortunately the sad truth is that beauty does matter. But I wish that Yang Peiyi could have had her time to shine.

  5. The  Milli Vanilli of China.

  6. communists suck.

  7. of course - China's current economic boom is fuelled by free enterprise, though the government is still communist.  One step at a time.

  8. One can only hope. Pretty tough to change a bloodthirsty communist regime.....
