Will Claxton makes an early mark at Mayakoba Golf Classic
Mexican golf course of Playa Del Carmen has turned out to be a lucky charm for Will Claxton.
The American golfer, with the help of a 5-under 66 in harsh weather conditions, was able to grab a one-shot lead at the Mayakoba Golf Classic.
The golfer from Auburn was able to clinch a leading position despite heavy competition from the second place.
Tied for second place are Charles Howell III, Greg Owen, John Huh, Marc Turnesa, Alejandro Canizares, Matt Every and Mark D. Anderson.
The 30-year-old golfer, who started his fifth PGA Tour this year, was able to make four consecutive birdies to gain an upper hand on his back nine.
Claxton and Turnesa were the only golfers who were able to enjoy bogey-free rounds in the first round of the championship.
Commenting on first days play Charless Howell III said, "This golf course, it really keeps your attention off the tees. There's a lot of trouble out there, and it's too hard to get ahead of yourself here".
"The golf course almost helps you stay where you're at just because it demands a lot of focus and attention on it. Fortunately, I was able to drive the ball in play today, and that gives you a good chance around here to score," he went on.
In addition to this, other players like Kevin Stadler, Josh Teater, Dicky Pride, Seung-Yul Noh, Hunter Haas, David Hearn, Michael Allen and Sunghoon Kang, all had a score of 68 on the board.
They are all regarding the place as one of the best and most relaxing places they have to play golf all year around.
Along with this, defending champion Johnson Wagner launched his campaign by scoring 73.
Wagner, after winning the Sony Open in Hawaii and taking the second position at the Humana Challenge, anticipates gaining greater consistency at Mayakoba.
Wagner will, once again, be teeing it off with his old opponent Spencer Levin, whom he defeated on the first hole of a playoff. Levin opened his account with 73.
Meanwhile, the designer of the course, Greg Norman, had a 79. He will be putting it with the same group as Wagner and Levin.
On the other hand, Weir, after all the turmoil, struggled to clinch 79 on the board. It is expected that the upcoming rounds of the event will offer greater entertainment to the audience.
