Will DVD+R DL discs work with my DVD player if my player plays DVD+R discs?

Question

I have a good DVD player and it is about 4 years old. It plays DVD + R movies. However, I just bought my first pack of DVD + R DL discs. Will these new discs be compatible with my DVD player? Another words, if it works with + R will it always work with DVD DL, or are they read by the player completely differently? Thanks!!

PS: Can anyone recommend a good program to back up DVD movies?

i use both.  never had a problem with my dvd player playing them. try using DVD shrink. the feds outlawwed all software that backs up DVDs. so you can't buy it. see if a friend has it.
