In my opinion she's the best female jock in the business... PERIOD! She has already won the The Soveriegn Award for best apprentice jockey (Canadian) and The Eclipse for the same. Now she is the first female jockey to win the Queen's Plate.

  1. "I am not sure"?  "I think that a win for Emma would be great, but I just don't know"!:?

  2. never, that.......she has to 1st find that big horse, Julie krone.....was a super jockey bar-none.....let's get Alex Solis in the winner circle first....lol

  3. The short answer... NO.

The long answer...Absolutely no freakin' chance in hey-yall.

  4. probably not, she would have to really impress the big trainers and barns here in the states to even get big mounts, that and there is 'locked up' business on the best of the 3 year olds with all the top jocks and agents who are very familiar with the big barns and trainers, there is a long list of very accomplished jocks in the wings who dont get top rides in the biggest stake races, much less the first weekend in may (Ky Derby)...I admire any jockey for what they do, i know its even tougher for a female to break into the bigs...but I dont feel im going out on a thin limb to say she wont win the derby...but she would have to ride stateside very successfully in order to even be considered for a mount in the derby...

  5. Never say never in horse racing.   I would say that she is surely a long shot in winning the Derby.  Who knows, some owner may give her a chance, but again the odds are hi against that.  good luck.

  6. She would have to move her tack outside of Canada to have a realistic shot.  She simply doesn't have access to the quality babies that are Derby potential.  Even in the Queen's Plate she was on an outsider but won despite the odds.  Now she's very young and has (hopefully) a long and successful career in front of her.  Building a relationship with some of the 'ship in' stables would be a good start (although admittedly that's the dream of every Woodbine jockey).  Possibly moving her tack to Arkansas or Louisiana or even Florida in the winter would be good.  She'll need a good agent and good horses and breaking into the American Derby market will take lots of perseverance, but if she put her mind to it I think she could.

  7. Unless someone at Woodbine comes across a horse good enough to run in the Derby,  she would have to pick up her tack and move to the States. Even if she did well in the States there would be no guarantees. Although it is probably more sexist than anything else, owners and trainers just feel more comforatble with a male on their horse, especially one with enough value and talent to be in the Derby. I think its great that she is the first female ever to win the Plate but she did it with a longshot, so even the more popullar horses here were using male jockeys.

  8. The problem with being a female jockey is that it is not just about how well you ride, but about who is prepared to give you a ride on their horse.  Unfortunately racing is still a male-dominated sport and a lot of people still consider male jockeys to be stronger and fitter than female jockeys.  They feel that their horse would be at a disadvantage with a female jockey on board.  Most people seem to forget that, at least here in GB, I'd say that 60% of the people working in racing yards are female and that they ride work on the same horses that you see on the racecourse every single day.

If she can find a powerful stable that will give her the rides then she may stand a good chance, but she will need to get past a lot of old-fashioned thinking.
