Question:

Will England miss Owen ?

As the Tabloids are currently out for Capello's head, they are saying he is making a blunder leaving out Owen, what are your thoughts ?

I think he is right to do so, no player should have automatic selection based on their name and what they have done in the past, give other 'in form' players a chance to prove themselves, if Owen shows form then bring him back in, until then leave him out

  1. Pick players on form, you are right, but Owen is on form too.  He has scored 2 goals in 4 games so far this season.

I think Capello is being very myopic by leaving him out of the squad entirely.  40-plus goals in 89 games is not to be sneezed at.  When he was missing for the Euro 2008 qualifiers, we really struggled to pose any kind of goal threat.  The result, three games against Macedonia, Croatia and Israel where we didn't score.

Owen also has a proven track record of scoring for England, no matter how well or badly he has been playing for his club.  He always comes up with the goods.  He has also scored against every 'standard' of opposition from the minnows of Luxembourg, the mid-standard teams such as Denmark, and big nations like Brazil, Argentina and Germany.

Find me another English striker who can do this?

  2. the only reason their saying that is because he used to be a big name he has to earn the right to be in the england squad like david beckham went through with mcclaren. Jamaine Defoe is a much better striker now we saw that o saturday with his performance against everton, however i still wouldn't have heskey, ashton or crouch for that role.

  3. I'm sure they will, but as I'm an Irish Newcastle fan I would much prefer he never played for England again, he always comes back injured.

  4. I think we'll miss him, he plays his best football for England although that's nothing to go by recently.

you can't say Wayne Rooneys in form really. It said on sky sports news this mourning that Owen's scoring ratio is once every 2.2 games for England, and the average of Rooney's, Defoe's, Heskey's, Walcott's ratio for England is once every 5.04 games.

I agree with what you say about giving other players a chance, but its a chance that when you look at the stats, we cannot take.

  5. If he played Owen, I would have already written England off as it would just show that he had no spine.

The guys been injured, come back scored a couple of goals and that makes him an automatic choice?

Let's see if we can win some games with consistent, in-form players like Defoe
