I am currently attending an in state college but I want to apply for an out of state college. It is over 20,000 dollars to attend if I am an out of state resident. Would FAFSA cover that if I applied? How much of it would they cover. All of my tuition got paid for by them for in state college.

Any information would help. Thanks.

  1. There is no way that you will get all that much money from Federal Aid.  You will be looking at some major student loans if you choose to take this route

  2. Yes. The FAFSA is Federal Student Aid, so you can use it at any college throughout the country.

  3. You can get a student loan to go to an out of state college, but you won't qualify for more money than you would otherwise get if you stayed in state because going away is a luxury the government thinks is excessive.  The max stafford loan a dependent sophomore can get is only 6,500 a year.

  4. You will get the same amount from the things that FAFSA controls as you do for your instate school. Period. You will lose and state grants if your school has them, so for many, you end up with less.

You get the same Pell Grant, the same Stafford Loan and the same work study. Any additional money would have to come from the school which is unlikely if it's an out of state public.

  5. yes they will pay for an out of state school. but you wont get the help from your state that you are now. you'd have to be a resident to get local help. but, the fafsa forms you fill out are for schools nationwide. there is a cap on it though. it used to be 3500 per semester, thats in grants that you dont pay back.
