  1. No, FASFA is not a student loan. FASFA is the application that you must fill out in order to get financial aid. At the end of the application they will ask you what schools to send the info to and it determines what types of financial aid you are eligible for (pell grant, Stafford loan, etc.), which pays for the things you need.

  2. No, the amount that government aid totals, the only thing FAFSA decides, is a drop in the bucket towards Columbia's $50,000/yr cost. If you qualify for maximum governement aid, Columbia which has a large endowment, will help you cover the rest through grants in most cases.

  3. It depends on your income, assets, enrollment status and dependency status.  Some get enough, some don't.  Do you have parents willing to do a PLUS loan for you?  If so then I'd be confident to say yes.  Without more info it's hard to tell.  If you were going to a community college id say yes.

  4. It depends on what the result of your FAFSA application is.  You need to contact the college financial aid department to see what your award package consists of as far as grants and loans.  They will be able to let you know if the aid that you qualified for will cover the cost of attending their school.  If it isn't they will be able to show you where to apply for scholarships and work-study programs to cover the rest.
