  1. Of course Federer has room for improvement. His backhand shots are inconsistent and often too improperly timed, causing him to play wild shots into the sky.The winds even make it worse for him.He must learn how to factor in the wind in his timing.Nadal strategizes by attacking his backhand and exposing it's inadequacies.Secondly,Federer needs to learn how to rally for long,if it becomes necessary as it often is with Nadal, without making unforced errors such as the one he made at final matchpoint Wimbledon 08 when he blew a forehand(supposed winner) from the forecourt into the net.Very painful.Nadal will very rarely make such an error on such a big point.Thirdly,Fed needs to learn how to execute well timed forehand drop shots. He needs them during rallies to mix up shots and destabilize baseliners like Nadal.Beside these faults,I think his game is superb.

  2. I don't think Federer needs to improve to win him the US open and Masters series this year because Nadal's game is not suited to hard court but this time next year Nadal will be hot on Federers tail so eventually he will need to improve and we will.. but Nadal will take over Federer and take his number 1 ranking in 2 or 3 years

  3. Federer does not have to improve his game as he is No. 1 or 2 on grass and hardcourts and No.2 on clay,. He is the perfect tennis player in terms of fundamentals and physique which also means he probably can't improve much either. And you really can't doubt his mental fortitude. He reached 2 Grand Slam Finals and one semi this year. He was playing with mono in Australia and was 2 points away at Wimbledon. That is a spectacular year for anyone other than Federer (for now). As for him converting only 1 of 13 breakpoints and hitting that many unforced errors, you got to give Nadal credit for that. The heaviness of Nadal's shots and his excellent court coverage will wear you down physically and mentally.

Unfortunately, Nadal is the perfect weapon to neutralize Federer's game. Like Safin says, run like a rabbit and hit winners from every corner of the court. And I'll add being a lefty helps as well. So, he will continue to struggle against Nadal. But everyone else is fair game for him, at least for the next 2 years.

  4. yes,he will come back with a great victory

  5. he'll certainly improve .... but Nadal had his age as an advantage + hes more muscular and strong

  6. Technically there is not much room for improvement for Federer. He could try to beef up a bit so that he can challenge Nadal physically but the major improvement he can make is his mentality. Nadal has a hold over him and the high number of unforced errors by Federer in the Wimbledon Final shows that he needs to have more focus when playing Nadal.

  7. My mate hopes so!!

  8. Some people consider Roger Federer (including himself) to be the "best that ever existed in tennis." I don't think he could make too much improvement because of his pure skill. He is a very talented and skilled player, but unfortunately his mental game isn't as strong as it used to be. He lost so badly in this year's French Open because he went onto that court knowing that Rafael Nadal is the king of clay and that he is nearly unbeatable. With that attitude, Federer didn't stand a chance. At Wimbledon, Federer had the mentality of thinking that it would be an easy defeat over Nadal because he had 60-some consecutive wins on grass. So concluding, I would say that one of the only ways for Federer to improve would be his unstable mentality.

  9. Federer will obviously try harder to improve this year since he hasn't won a grand slam yet, there's still US open, which I like best. Also being humilliated at French open and Wimbledon by the same person is definitely going to make him much more determined to win more and more.

  10. I don't think there is much he can improve in my opinion. The best that he can do is be more consistent and hit more forehand winners. (compared to his unbelievable amount of errors he made) and he also needs to beable to take advantage of break point chances (1 break point taken our of 13...? come on). Overall, I believe that his forehand and backhand are perfect. The best he can do is being more accurate at his shots down the line and cross court. His serves were simply amazing as it has been one of his biggest weapons in that match. So theres my opinion, might not agree but hey! thats what opinions are for =P

  11. There is no more improvement in his game. He is playing at capacity. At 27 he should be more concern on his health and not getting injured.

  12. You would expect him to.  Though how much room is there for improvement... ?  Nadal's shots looked that bit harder than Federer's, but I reckon that's more to do with Nadal's power than Federer's weakness.

This might sound daft, but Nadal has only achieved the 'easy' part, winning his first Wimbledon.  The hard part is maintaining motivation and winning it again and again and again.

Everyone will be out to beat Nadal now instead of Federer, which means more pressure on Nadal and often better tennis from his opponents as they raise their game.

If Federer can win the US Open that should restore some of the confidence he's bound to have lost during the last few months.
