Will Georgia and Russia go to war? And if they do, who will join in and for who?

Unfortunately, the Georgians made a mess of this one for us.  Most of the Ossetian people are actually Russian citizens, meaning that many of these "hundreds of civilians" that are reported casualties of the Georgian attack, are Russian citizens.  Under international law, this gives Russia justification for launching what would be seen as a counter attack against Georgian aggression.  I'm sure the Bush administration will rattle the sabers at Russia, but without legal justification, any harsh threat against Russia would leave America looking very foolish and would diminish her status in the world even further.  I doubt any one else will get involved.  Rather, Georgia is probably going to have to accept the loss of South Ossetia in return for their stupidity.  They may lose the Abkhaz region too if they attempt any sort of escalation against Russia.

It is not a conflict between Russia and Georgia. It is a civil war in Georgia. Southern Osetia wants independence. Russia supports it. Why then USA does not want to support independence of Southern Osetia? USA is for freedom of people right!? Free Kosovo, remember? Georgia did not attack Russia. Georgia attacks Southern Osetia. It happened that Russians had troops overthere to keep peace, but it did not help

It will depend on Georgia... So far Georgia did not attack Russian territory... If it happens then..... I do not know

It might end to fast to be an actual war. I think this will end up playing out as a Georgia vs Russian backed Separatists.

Western Countries will back Georgia in this one, probably not militarily, but politically. I hope people react to Russias actions harshly.

Russia is a terrible aggressor. They do everything to destroy Georgia and punish them for their pro-western course. This is all to stop it from joining NATO because they believe Georgia and other ex-ussr countries still "belong" to them. This is all happening in XXI century. That is what European appeasement brings.

NATO is probably discussing this as you type. They will not likely ever let the Soviet Union regroup, however, it isn't likely that they will enter into a direct confrontation just yet. Europeans are cowards for the most part.

If Russia and Georgia do end up in a full blown war and it gets too out of control then America will back up Georgia because we are strongly ailed with them. The UK will probably end up helping too because they are strongly ailed with the US, and the sounding countries ailed with Georgia will help because they don't want it to spread in their countries. I don't think it will end up in a war but who knows. If this does end up in war and the USA is helping the fight then Russia probably will declare war on the US. And we might have the start of WWIII on are hands. I don't mean to scare anyone but I like talking about this kind of stuff. Hope this doesn't happen. = )
