Will Godolphin Racing, Jerry Bailey and Frankie Dettori be able to resurface in the 2012 Dubai World Cup Carnival?
The 2012 Dubai World Cup will be the seventeenth running of this Cup, which was inaugurated in 1996 for the thoroughbred flat horse racing.
It is raced for over a distance of ten furlongs, 2,000 metres. It is for thoroughbreds aged three-year-old and above. Being one of the richest races in the world, it offers the prize money of US$10 million. This illustrious event has now been incorporated
with the Dubai World Cup Carnival, which till 2004 was known as the Dubai International Racing Carnival.
Thus, for the Carnival, 2012 will mark the ninth season. Taking a look at the previous champions of the Dubai World Cup specifically in regard to the country, owner, trainer and jockey will define the prediction line for this year to some extent at
least.
“Meydan has developed as a centerpiece of the international racing calendar and the further growth of the Dubai World Cup and Dubai World Cup Carnival will ensure that Dubai serves as a winter destination for some the biggest names in racing. We are
pleased with our past accomplishments, but we also look to the future for even greater experiences in racing for Meydan, the Dubai World Cup and the [United Arab Emirates]”.
Frankie Dettori is one of those champion jockeys’s, who has raced the Dubai World Cup winners not once or twice, rather a good three times.
In 2000, Frankie Dettori rode the four-year-old, Dubai Millennium, who was trained by Saeed bin Suroor for Godolphin Racing which is owned by the Ruler of the Dubai City.
Then in 2003, Frankie Dettori again raced for Godolphin Racing and was onboard the four-year-old, Moon Ballad, who also was trained by Saeed bin Suroor. In 2006, Frankie Dettori again rode for the same trainer and owner, winning the Dubai World Cup
with the five-year-old, Electrocutionist.
Encompassing Frankie Dettori’s record is Jerry Bailey, who took the bar up by one additional victory, making it a total of four successes in comparison to Frankie Dettori.
Jerry Bailey reserves the honour of being the winning jockey of the very first running of the Dubai World Cup in 1996. He rode the, American Cigar, to the winning line. Yet again an exclusive accomplished by none other than Jerry Bailey, who won the
very next running of the Dubai World Cup as well. He was onboard, Singspiel, who was trained by Sir Michael Stoute and owned by Sheikh Mohammed.
Jerry Bailey’s next pair of victories came in 2001 and 2002. Winning the Dubai World Cup in pairs has not been attained by any other jockey yet. In 2001, he raced the four-year-old, Captain Steve, to victory who was trained by Bob Baffert and owned
by Michael Pegram.
The last time Jerry Bailey raced and won was in 2002. Street Cry was his mount that day, trained by Saeed bin Surror and owned by Godolphin Racing.
Gary Stevens won with, Silver Charm, in 1998 followed by Richard Hills winning in 1999 onboard, Almutawakel. In 2004, the victor, Pleasantly Perfect, was ridden to victory by Alex Solis. The 2005 title went to John Velazquez who was riding, Roses In
May. Fernando Jara won with, Invasor, in 2007 which was then followed by Robby Albarado riding, Curlin, in 2008. Aaron Gryder raced, Well Armed, to victory in 2009 and then it was T. J Pereira’s turn to embrace victory with, Gloria de Campeao, in 2010.
Last year’s winners stood out to be Mirco Demuro with Victoire Pisa.
Godolphin Racing has been the most prominent when it comes to winning the Dubai World Cup, however, it has not won the Cup since 2006.
