Question:

Will Haarlem Oil (Juniper Berry Tar) clean out my horse's kidneys?

My mare has been sick recently. We resorted to force feeding her and she just now began to eat some alfalfa after about a week and a half of not eating. We had the vet come out and take two blood tests and he said that she had/has a kidney infection. Her creatin level was at 46 which should be around 20 something.

A girl at my barn said to give her Haarlem Oil because it would clean her out. Does anyone have any experience with Haarlem Oil? Thanks!

  1. Check with your veterinarian; before administering anything to your horse that you are not familiar with.  Just a good rule of thumb.  Apparently a lot of folks use this, but, if your horse is on another medication for kidney problems that your vet prescribed I'd sure let your vet know about it before giving this to her.  It seems to have quite a following..people, dogs, equines take it.

  2. It should not be given in the presence of kidney disease as it may overstimulate the kidneys....it is never wise to use such products without advice from your vet...it may interact with other treatments, etc. and is not safe.

  3. Apparently it is used for oral equine use only as a diuretic.

EDIT****I didn't know that until I looked it up.
