  1. Looking to the far, far future, we can envisage a time when technology is such that all our needs and desires are catered for instantly.

In such a world, nobody need ever work again.  In order to occupy their time, our descendents would have to turn to either hedonism, or some other pursuit such as creativity or intellectualism.

If you're into science fiction at all, then Iain M. Banks's Culture series of novels portray a society not unlike this.

  2. No, it will be 'shoe and handbag salesman'.

They will come to be like Drug Dealers, only Perfectly Legal ~ unless of course there is a Law against it, or maybe 'Shoe Rationing' comes into force as an EU Directive!

    Sash.

  3. I think it's well on its way.

  4. I certainly hope so! We would then have less enthusiasm for war, bigotry, and so many attitudes and drives that have largely ruined a beautiful world. Epicurus has been much maligned and misunderstood ... he held that the greatest pleasures are those of the mind. Would that every human being's happiness could increase a hundredfold ... we would be occupied with more constructive pursuits than is now the case and realize that our differences are not so overwhelming in view of our common humanity.

  5. No. That can't happen.

A mother, for example, will always put her children before herself, almost without exception. She will therefore always fight for their own happiness, potentially negleting her own.

  6. The sooner the better, it`s at least better than trying to control ppl`s desires with weird religions.

  7. The world would be destroyed before that could happen totally due to greed and self gratification.   All that would be left at the very end is disease, starvation, poverty, vulnerability and hate throughout every corner of the world.   What we are already seeing in some third world countries and poorer countries closer to home would just manifest.

People can be greedy when nature already gives us everything that we need, but it can turn on us at anytime and will always win.

  8. the other half of hedonism is to avoid pain. so i'd say no, we are far from avoiding pain.
