Will Hurricane Gustav be another Hurricane Katrina?

  1. Well, if you think about hurricane Katrina made landfall as a category three. It weakened just before making landfall.

This storm could be similar but should not have as big of an effect on NO as Katrina did. This time NO is prepared with buses and they know what to and not to do.

It looks as if Gustav will make landfall as a strong category 3 hurricane. The current track brings it to the West of NO which will put them on the weaker side of the storm. The track could change so there is a possibility that Gustav could do similar damage to NO and the Gulf Coast.

Another thing is that since the storm is going to make landfall to the west of NO they are going to get the worst of the storm surge. Since winds blow counterclockwise the winds on the east side of the storm are blowing toward NO. The water will build up on the shore resulting in a higher surge than on the West side of Gustav. The surge could back up the Mississippi resulting in flooding upstream. Flooding is a big concern for New Orleans.

  2. Most any prediction is pure speculation, even though educated comparisons can be made. The best thing to do is to prepare for the worst and expect the best. Best to everyone at risk.

  3. well, no. Because its going to make landfall as a category 3 hurricane. Katrina was a category 5 hurricane. But it could be come a category 5, if it got bigger. But it will most likely be a category 3.

  4. Looking at the track it's more likely to be another Rita - the hurricane that devastated sw Louisianna near Lafayette.  However, it may not get much stronger than a catgory 2 - which would be not as bad as the cat 5 which hit that area in 2005.

  5. Before Katrina entered the gulf, the fcast was for it to be a cat 2 and of course it went thru rapid intensification to a cat 5. No one can tell its final peak intensity, the conditions are ripe for rapid bombogenesis due to adequate oceanic latent heat content and light upper level shear. It can easily upgrade to a cat 4 or 5 so dont be surprised.

Not only that comp models are now indicating rapid deepenign before a Cuba landfall and for it track towards SE Texas.

  6. It almost certainly WILL NOT BE.  If history has taught us anything, it is that not only is the route of the pending storm totally unpredictable but also that the INTENSITY OF THE STORM CAN VARY JUST AS DRAMATICALLY.  Before Katrina made landfall there were two points in which she DOUBLED in size: 48 hours before landfall as well as 24 hours before landfall.  The most significant was that Katrina developed from a Cat 3 storm to a Cat 5 storm in less than 12 hours.  This means that in less than 48 hours, Katrina's tropical storm force winds extended from 80 miles from the eyewall to over 230 MILES FROM THE EYEWALL!!!

For those of us who lived through what can only be known as "the perfect storm" know, WHO CARES ABOUT THE EXACT PLACE OF LANDFALL REALLY?????  KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL!!!!  (OR THE EYEWALL IN THESE CASES) AND RUN LIKE h**l IF THAT EVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

Until then, let's not worry just for worry's sake.  Just stay informed, stay tuned, and be prepared.

And as always in New Orleans, "Laissez les bons temps rouler! "

    Peace!

  7. it could be ppl above are crazy its a4 now and has open gulf ahed  of it although it wont hit directly it could be more intense with less destuction

  8. Looks like Weatherm is the only one to get it right!   With a little bit of research, you will fing that Katrina was a category 5 storm but it weakened to a gategory 3 storm by the time it hit land fall on the morning of Aug 29.   So for heaven's be prepared and don't take this storm too lightly!   Good Luck!

  9. Its a possibility

not to be worried though but right now its a cat 4 and has a good chance to repeat katrina only difference is NOLA will be on the right side of the storm aka the strongest part.IT WILL BE BAD. If you live there leave right now or itll be to late.Katrina did not make landfall as a cat 5.No storms in 2005 did. This might not even get to cat 5.It has a chance though.Even with a leve system better than when katrina made landfall

it still might fail. in 2005  they thought it would work gusse what it didnt that means it might not work this time eather.:( best of luck to them and you.

  10. I don't think so. Right now Tropical Storm Gustav is expected to make landfall as a cat 3 hurricane. Hurricane Katrina was a cat 3 too, yes. However, it weakened when it made landfall. And, no one was prepared. Now, New Orleans is on full alert for Gustav, and everything is going better there right now for Gustav. So I believe this time will be different. Of course Gustav will be bad probably, but they are more prepared.

  11. Almost certainly not. Even the most dramatic forecasts show Gustav making landfall as category 3 storm that will be much, much weaker than Katrina.

All of the levees that were damaged by Katrina have been repaired, and the levee system is getting a $14 Billion upgrade (not finished yet). Gustav is very unlikely to threaten the integrity of the levee system.

Our greatest concern right now is because the drainage system was very badly damaged by Katrina and have not been completely repaired. There is a probability of rainwater flooding if Gustav does strike NOLA.
