Question:

Will I, as a British Chinese, experience racism or intolerance at a Canucks game at GM Place?

Hello, I'm a British hockey fan who will be visiting Vancouver in December. I am very excited to be visiting the country that gave birth to hockey, and I plan on purchasing tickets to Canucks games as soon as possible.

However, I am curious to know how much racism or intolerance I will receive due to my race, as a British Chinese. I have experienced such racist attitudes before at local football games here, and I hope to avoid such experiences as much as possible.

For those who have attended Canuck games in Vancouver, or simply live in Vancouver, how open-minded is the city? Have you experienced or witnessed any conflicts involving race? Will I be persecuted because of my skin tone?

Thank you very much for your responses, and I hope not to offend anyone by this question.

  1. (read with as much sarcasm as possible)

Yes, after all Vancouver has no diversity whatsoever.

  2. HI! I hope you enjoy Vancouver when you visit. I am honestly shocked to read your question. I have never thought the way you are thinking right now about traveling somewhere. Have you heard things about Vancouver that would lead you to believe Vancouver people to be racists? I am not trying to be mean or anything I am just curious. Just to let you know that Vancouver is known for its multi-cultural ways. Vancouver is so open minded that it’s very welcoming. Not to say that we don’t have our issues but I know so many people that have come to Vancouver as a trip and never went home. So I hope you have fun and enjoy the Canucks game and the wonderful city that is Vancouver. Don’t forget to check out the mountains and other surrounding cities.

  3. I don't think so I took one of my chinese friends to a hokcey game and nothing of the sort happened. My favourite hockey team is the Detroit Red Wings

  4. In my experience, MOST hockey fans tend to be tolerant (save the absurdly drunk ones!)

  5. You make it sound like it's in the extreme. There's racism everywhere, and I'm sure you'll have at least one person come up to you and politely ask about the English accent and Asian looks. Nothing wrong with that; it's just curiosity. I'm Chinese myself and grew up in an Italian neighbourhood. Sometimes, I speak with an Italian/gino accent and not even realize it. I still get weird looks from time to time on that.

Now that I think about it, Vancouver has a pretty large Chinese community (I think as much as Toronto, but I could be wrong). If you are going to experience racism, it'll be from our own kind and mostly from the elder immigrants from Hong Kong, just for being that different. You know what I'm talking about...

  6. NO. We are a city with different cultures. In fact, we have lots of Chinese people in here.

  7. You would NEVER have to hear any racial slurs at a hockey game. We only talk dirty about the game NOT the fans.

My favourite team is the Colorado Avalanche.

    Btw, enjoy the game!

  8. vancouver is known for its vast asian population.

so no, you won't get discriminated at all.

  9. Black, white, asian or Hispanic...

When it comes down to it, WE ARE ALL CANUCKS

  10. This is Vancouver. You may be discriminated more with that British accent.  My answer is NO!!! Enjoy the game.  By the way they have gotten rid of Naslund.

  11. Do you really think you're that special and unique that anyone is going to even look at you, let alone care about your ethnicity? Be serious.

  12. The friends you are visiting in Vancouver must be trying to scare you. The truth is:  ".......about one quarter of Vancouver's 1.5 million inhabitants are now of Asian descent, making it the most Asian city IN NORTH AMERICA!

Wear a Canucks jersey and you could be green for all it would matter.

  13. I have a friend in Vancouver, and he's Asian and he's a HUGE Canucks fan.  I don't think they will be rude to you at all.  I'm Chinese and I go to Devils games all the time and nobody really minds over here.

Sorry those people were rude to you at the football game :(
