I will be traveling to Munich, Germany, at the end of April. I am very fond of German hand blown Christmas ornaments. Do you think I will be able to find any in April in Munich? Do you know any specific shops? Thanks!

  1. Not sure if you can find a shop in Munich which sells Christmas stuff in April. But there's a shop in downtown Rothenburg/Tauber where you can buy Xmas stuff all year round and it's not too far away from Munich to the north. It's worth a try.

  2. don't know if there is a store in Munich, but I bought some ornaments from a Kathe Wolfahrt store in Heidelburg in September.  Fabulous stuff!!!

  3. As big and diverse as Munich is, I would think you could find something.  As others mentioned, Kathe Wohlfahrt's is the place to go, but they don't have a store in Munich.  There are multiple stores in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but you might find it easier to visit one of their stores in Nuremburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or Oberammergau.

    (see https://shop.wohlfahrt.com/wohlfahrt/pag... )

I can personally attest to the shops in Oberammergau-- one is devoted Christmas ornaments (the "Christkindlmarkt"), and has a very nice selection.  (See https://shop.wohlfahrt.com/wohlfahrt/pag... )

Good luck, and enjoy your trip!!!

(Just  checked, and there are trains from the Munich HBF to Oberammergau almost hourly... check www.bahn.de for more info.   I really do recommend the shop in "O-gau"-- I ended up with a lot of wonderful things....)

  4. I don't know about Munich, but in Rothenburg o.d. Tauber you'll find Käthe Wohlfahrt's 'Weihnachtsdorf'. The address is Herrngasse 1, 91541 Rothenburg ob der Tauber and the hours are Monday thru Friday 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Rothenburg o. d. T. is about 246 km (152 miles) north of Munich... from the city centre (it'll take you about 30 minutes to get out of Munich) get on the A99 (this Autobahn has radar...speed limit 100 kph) to the interchange München, Eschenried get on the A8 Autobahn (direction Ulm/Stuttgart) til you come to the interchange 65 (just before Ulm), take the A7 (direction Würzburg/Heilbronn) and you can be there in under 2 hours (without a traffic jam).

While in Rothenburg, do a little site seeing, there's a lot to see in this medieval walled city. Take a walk on the town wall and check out the Museum of Crimes and Punishment. Lots to do...it would be best to set aside a whole day (more if you want to take in everything in detail).

  5. There HAVE to be some stores that specialize in Christmas items.  However, if you could get to Rosenberg o Der Taber there is a KILLER Christmas shop there.  It is called "Kathe Wohlfart's Christmas Shop".  It is just off of the city square.  It has the largest nutcracker in the world and simply.  The town is north of Munich and close to Nurnburg.  Really worth the trip.  I also know of a place in Augsburg (west of Munich and good for a day trip)  that is just down the hill from the city hall. sorry I can't give you some better idea of stores in Munich.  If you fly in to Munich, stop at the information area at the airport.  they will know the name and address of such a shop.  HAVE FUN!

  6. I do not know and specific shops, but I am sure you can find lots of Christmas things in Munich year round.  Lots of the common American Christmas traditions originated in Germany, and I know they celebrate that tradition to some extent year round.
