Question:

Will I be able to get into Vanderbilt?

I am 14 and I just started my freshman year. My teachers keep telling me that now all my grades will determine if I go to college. I don't want to sound egotistic but I consider myself the smartest student in 8th grade. I had a 4.0 GPA and I was student ambassador in middle school. In our high school we have a program called the Work-Study program which assigns us to a job such as FedEx once a week. Since I will probably have great grades and I have a job with the Work-Study program, do you think I will probably be accepted into Vanderbilt. I really want to get into this school and I know it's too early to even think about college. I might join student council but I cannot do sports since unfortunately I am not athletic. Also will it help that I live in Tennessee? Please give me some more advice!

  1. Okay well you are only a Freshman. if you get excellent grades in high school, great GPA and gooood SAT Scores you'd probably get in. Don't forget to get involved, a college WILL deny you if you have a 4.0 and not involved so extra curricular is a must. work experience is good, volunteer work is good, but it is way too early to tell for you considering you are still a Freshman. Even if you're not athletic, join clubs and many of them.

  2. It will help if you manage to stay out of jail.

Make friends with your teachers, even at the cost of losing other friends. Recommendation letters are clutch. Go visit Vanderbilt long before your senior year. Get involved there somehow. Meet faculty, become their little pet and then ask them for a recommendation letter. There are ways of being "athletic" without ever having to move much, too. Does your school have a Spirit Club or something?

Don't let them feed you booze, and keep your pants on.

  3. A perfect 4.0 GPA, excellent exam scores (SAT/ACT), high levels of student involvement, and good letters of recommendation should be enough to gain entrance into Vanderbilt.

I would take as many AP classes as possible and work hard to develop relationships with your faculty. You should also endeavor to contribute to your community. Like many schools, Vanderbilt values students who make a positive contribution to their community, and this will help your application.
