Question:

Will I be able to lower my 5k time?

I just had my very first xc race and I ran the 5k in 30:45 min. It is such a horrible time, I came in like 118 out of 135 people. That is about 10 min a mile ugh. I have been in track for the past three years and my events are the 400m and 800m. My time for the 400 is 65 sec and 2:40 for the 800. If I run for 45+ min, I am able to, but I run it very slowly. Is it possible for me to lower my time to 27 min for 5k? I really want to lower my time by the end of the season but I feel like I don't have the endurance to do it.

  1. Definately...I started the season with 29.50 and lowered it to a 25.42 in about a month.  Just keep running every day and you will see a difference.  Believe me, it gets easier!

  2. The others have good comments.

I will just add that after this xc season, with consistant training and racing then I would think that you track PBs will improve.

The added strength you gain from this xc training then I would expect you would get close to 60 sec for 400, and possibly down to 2.20 for the 800m.

Just look at setting small personal goals.

  3. Step 1.)Talk to your coach. Maybe he/she can suggest ways to improve speed.

Step 2.)If you feel like your coach didn't help you at all. Do some research on a plan. Read Jack Daniel's Running Formula. It might be boring but if you want it bad enough you'll do it.

Step 3.)Always believe in yourself. Never doubt for one second that you can do it. In fact, when I first started running I was around 26 minutes (male). I never gave up, and in just four short years I am already down to 17 minute 5ks. Have patience and good things will come. Good luck!

  4. just keep running, eating right, and you're time will drop soon enough. the good thing about running a time like that is that it is easier to drop bigger amounts of time.
