Question:

Will I be all right? ?

I took four claritin (non-drowsy) 24 hour allergy pills (two early this morning and two tonight). I didn't get ANY results all day! but it was all I had. I have HORRIBLE allergies so I've been sucking on lozenges to clear my nose (my eyes are still watery and I keep sneezing). My friend gave me Benadryl so I could actually get some sleep and get rid of these allergies and I just took it. Will I be okay? I know the box says to take only one a day but they DON'T DO ANYTHING!

  1. This is what you need to do:  call a pharmacist. It doesn't have to be your pharmacist, just pick a pharmacist out of the Yellow Pages.  They should definitely be able to tell you whether you have any need to worry.

This is an old trick to clear your nose but I promise it will work:

Take about 1/2 teaspoon of salt and mix it with warm water.  Then sniff it up your nose. Wait a few seconds, then gently blow your nose. You should get some immediate relief.  I actually just had to do this myself  a couple of hours ago.

Make sure to call the pharmacist!  Good luck! Hope you feel back to normal soon.  :-)

  2. Go to an allergist where you will get some straonger allergy medicine.  Claritin is over-the-counter.  It sounds like you need something stronger and only an allergist can perscribe that to you.

  3. I don't know how much you weigh but 1 to 2 mg/kg won't really hurt you.  Benadryl is a pretty safe medication.  Most adults should take 50mg (two tablets) for a reaction.  If there is no improvement or serious symptoms begin (difficulty breathing, throat tightening, shortness of breath) CALL 911.  Even 200 mg although not recommended won't hurt you.  Normal dose in an emergency is 1mg/kg for pediatric and 50 mg IV (injected into your veins).  It can be followed by pepcid, tagamet and solu-medrol.  Breathing treatments are also given when the person is wheezing.

Otherwise enjoy the sleepy side effect of benadryl!  Get a good nap!

Then follow up with your doctor.  Your pharmacist is an excellent source of information like this.

To answer your first question----you should be fine.
