Will I be in shape for freshman volleyball? And what are some tips you have?

I'm going to be a freshman next year at my highschool. I REALLY want to get on the volleyball team. I've only played one year but I really feel a connection to the sport. I'll do whatever it takes to be in shape for the tryouts in August.

I weigh 145 pounds and I'm 5'6. I've lost 5 pounds already after a week and a half.

I do 100 crunches, 25 push ups [with small breaks inbetween], around 50-100 crunches, 25 squats, bike around 5-8 miles within about 40 minutes, and usually do a moderate jump rope for 20 minutes. For more fun I kind of just hit my volleyball off my garage.

It's taken me a while but I eat decently healthy.

I don't even touch much junk food now. I only drink milk, green tea, and water. I eat around 1200-1600 calories a day.

What I would really appreciate is some tips. I just want to be sure I'm working out enough and in the right places. I'm probably going to start working on my jump. I'm going to all the open gyms I can. Please, anyone? Tips?

  1. do some weight training you need to build up your muscles so you are strong enough to jump. do some agility drills you need to be able to move ever quickly in vball. also do some sprints. endurance is good, but you have to be able to moe fast and be able to make it through the long intense volleys. do some jumps like blocking or approches good hard ones and think quality not quantity.

oh and I once heard that if you dont take in enough calories a day it actually slows down tour metabolism it was on ellen on rachel ray I think

anyways I think its really good that you are doing all  of this.  I started a weight training program in 9th grade and I am in my 4th year of it believe me it helps especially if your coach is watching :) keep up the hard work and commitment to your work outs good luck for your season!

  2. im in the same boat as you, i'm 141lbs but extremely muscular. i'm currently following a summer fitness program. check out the link.

  3. do more stuff for your legs (like more squats).  it'll make it easier to get through practices and games without getting sore b/c in volleyball you're mainly just squatting and moving around like that the whole time, especially when you're playing defense.  other than that, it sounds like you're in great shape.  keep up the good work.

  4. run rather than conditon, lots of coaches make you run to show them your stamina and endurance. it doesnt matter how much you weigh but how much effort you bring. many coaches would rather pick a less expericenced play with a great attitude that doesnt complain rather than a great player with a horrible attitude because one player can ruin or make a whole team. just have a great attitude and dont complain and take direction openly and gladly when given dont act like you know everything because that annoys coaches they notice attitude and effort more than skills but make yourself valuable, play every position well and 1-2 positions good. work on setting or hitting whichever one you prefer and master it. look online for drill that you can do by yourself. good luck :]

  5. join a beach league to warm you up.

do plenty of lunges , expect alot of them at tryouts

    stay hydrated!

  6. It doesn't matter how you look, as long as your good and are able to get anything (like dive, spike, set, serve) No matter what though you have to have enough muscle from the waist down. It would be good to have arm muscle too.

  7. It sounds like you are doing great on your exercising, but you need to RUN!!!  It will build endurance, which is essential in volleyball, and muscle in your legs.  Also, get  your hands on a ball, maybe get some private lessons or go to a volleyball camp.  Also, call up some of the other girls that are going to be playing with you.  If you are going to be teammates, then you will need to have experience playing with them.  :D  Good luck!!!

  8. I am a freshman too, and just made jv. With freshman the coaches always want someone with a good attitude that really wants to make the team. And they are willing to go to every practice, every game, and listen to everything the coaches say.

    Need 2 Know @ Tryouts:

You need to know how to serve overhand.

    You must be very fit.

You must have a positive attitude, talk to the coach, players, help and be extremely nice.

Most of the time at tryouts you first have a stratching session, so be flexible, you run a little, but not very far, less than half a mile. (its not track)

So you don't have to be able to do a ton of conditioning things, but you must be in shape. So, being able to do a lot of push ups, and sit-ups can be helpful. You can already do that. :)

    Nutrition Tips:

A healthy body,  is a healthy mind, is a healthy player

Drink a lot of water (minimum is 1/2 your body weight in ounces)

Sodas are detrimental to good health and athletic performance

Don't diet!  Fad diets don't work long term.

Eat within 1/2 hour to 45 minutes of a workout or tournament

Eat 4 to 6 small meals during the day

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables (french fries don't count)

Carbohydrates are good for you if not processed or over refined.

    Stay away from sugar

Never miss breakfast, it really is the most important meal of the day.

Don't eat within two hours of bedtime and no sugar, it prevents your growth hormones from releasing

Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night to allow your body to repair.

The hours before midnight are the most important hours of sleep, so get to bed early, yuck bad but true.

You seem very persistent, and have a great attitude, don't overwork yourself though! Good luck, I bet you will make it! :D

  9. I'm an upcoming freshman too. This will be my third year playing and I'm trying out for varsity. To get better at passing, have someone toss you the ball and pass it back to them. This will help you with ball control. You should also do box jumps. Get a solid box thats about 2 ft tall and stand in front of it and jump up on it about 50 times. This helped me jump higher. Oh, and use ankle weights when your comfortable doing this.  This helps so much if you are a hitter/blocker. Jump roping is really good too cuz you get quicker. Theres no need to jump for 5 million hours though. Just do about 600 quick jumps. Once you do it everyday it seems really easy. Good luck!
