  1. Well it all depends on you and how you carry yourself when you get here in Japan. If your conceded just because your taller than everyone else then you can say yes you won't make hardly any friends. But if your down to earth and respect us then everything will be all good. As far as your height is concerned. Being a woman at 6'1 is already kind of tall for a woman in any country. Besides isn't the average height for a woman is 5'7 to 5'8 any ways.

  2. No I don't think so..

  3. Don't worry, japanese aren't all the same, there are tall japanese and short japanese(like any other peole of the world).

You won't have any problem making friends in Tokyo if you can speak japanese.

  4. Yes, it will.

  5. I married a Japanese and have a few Japanese friends.  I am 5'0.  I have met many Japanese that were A LOT taller than myself.

Typically, Japanese women are smaller, but there are women that don't fit the profile. There are tall and short women of every color, creed, and race.

You will easily make friends when in Japan because Japanese people are interested in Western culture.  You'll be asked many things about your country, your traditions, and how your relationships with friends are.

You have to think, many foreign people visit Tokyo and a lot are much taller than the average Japanese. Don't feel bad or ashamed, embrace it... for you will make plenty of friends.

I think people in the north are much taller, all the members of GLAY are basically from Hokkaido ('cept Hisashi who is from Aomori) and they're above 6'.

  6. Actually you feel yourself as Ms.Gulliver in Lilliput. Watch your head always everywhere for not knocking your head against the ceiling, door top, tree branches and many thing in mid-air.

You must take a bunch of curiosity looking from people's eyes all around when you go walk outside. High heels are not good choice for walking there too.

Honestly speaking, female tall height could somehow influence to Japanese male to hesitate to intimate with her if he has some inferiority complex about it. If he are kind of fetish to tall female, it could be better though.

You could find some normal tall American or European in Japan instead.

  7. If your height were the only thing that makes you different, you won't have a hard time making friends in Tokyo. Before people notice your height, they will notice you don't look Japanese or speak Japanese with an accent. The issues you face making friends won't be any different from the any other Japanese person trying settle in Japan for a few years.

Now, while most everyone will say height does not matter in making friends, they aren't saying that as people who have a hard time finding clothes or who have to duck under doorways to get through, so what you experience may not be the same as what others say.

One assumption tall girls always get in Japan is that they play volleyballs. If you're tall, you'll be assumed to be a star volleyball player. If you have other tall girl friends, you'll be assumed to be teammates. You may or may not like that kind of stereotype. Or you can play it the other way around. You can join a volleyball team, and it's likely you'll make good friends with your teammates soonly.

  8. Unlike in your country, in our country we don't discriminate just because people are tall, fat, or whatever.

    So don't worry.

  9. If you can speak Japanese fluently, you won't have a problem to make friends.

By the way, I do believe that personality is much more important than appearance when it comes to making real friends in any country. So you shouldn't worry about your height so much.
