Question:

Will I forget how to speak my language?

I live in South Africa and I speak Afrikaans (Not thoroughly but I still speak it). I might be immigrating to Australia soon and i'm afraid i'll forget how to speak Afrikaans because i'm only 14.. Will I or will I not?

  1. if its your native tongue then no. but you should practice, because you can get rusty.  


  2. You won't forget your mother tongue, but your proficiency will decline if you don't continue speaking it. The best way to prevent this is to continue speaking Afrikaans and to listen to the radio, watch tv, and read books in Afrikaans.  

  3. No, you will not. Though the quality of speech will slightly get less when time passes, you will never forget the basics of your languages. I know from own experience, as I am from Dutch origin, and I have lived in several countries in Europe. I speak Dutch, English, German, Swiss German and French and it is quite difficult to maintain your languages at a high level, especially when you don't use them all regularly. But no matter how long you don't speak the language... after a few days (maybe weeks) of speaking it again, it will all come back again.
