  1. No, higher octane gas is better for the engine because it is better quality.

Plus or premium is used for powerful or forced induction engines like turbo engines.

Premium gas adds around 5 HP to your car.

  2. Premium is the best choice.

  3. There is absolutely no benefit in using fuel with an octane rating higher than what is recommended by the manufacturer of your car.

    - It won't improve mileage.

    - It won't make your car go faster.

    - It won't make your engine last longer.

    - It won't prevent unwanted blemishes.

    - It won't make you better looking.

    - It will drain your wallet faster.

  4. Generally, yes. However, the increased cost of buying premium will quickly negate any savings from increase economy.

I think the only time you should use premium is if the manufacturer of the car you are refueling recommends premium or if (on the rare occasion) premium costs the same as regular. Many of the high performance and luxury cars recommend that you use premium.

  5. At some point you will need to check for yourself, the best  fuel will surprise you. If when looking at the dispenser when fueling you notice the sticker it will say min. octane rating. This means during the test this is the least octane rating that can be acquired. This doesn't mean the store can't sell 91, 93 under the 87 label. For the answer you asked no change in fuel economy will be realized.

  6. No, you won't, the octane in gasoline neither affects the gas mileage or performance of your car, but rather the likelihood of your engine knocking (when pockets of air in your engine explode due to a spark plug pre-ignition), if you drive a non-turbo, non-supercharged 6-cylinder or smaller non-performance oriented engine, you will not require   any fuel above unleaded as the chance of knocking is nil due to the engine design. However, if you have a turbocharged, supercharged, or high horsepower engine, you will likely be required to use premium gasoline as high performance engine are prone to engine knocking.

  7. It depends on the car (engine type/configuration) but on most cars the gain in mileage isn't enough to make up for the difference in price. If you can afford the type of car in which it would make a difference in performance (because it won't effect the mileage enough) then you won't be worried about the price of gas.
