I'm looking at buying a Onkyo SR605 Receiver and a Panasonic BD30 Bluray Player for my 57" rear projection TV, which has no HDMI ports and 1080i, but has 2 DVI ports. 1) Will I get the quality I'm looking for on this TV? 2) Am I going overkill with the Onkyo receiver since I'm not using HDMI exclusive? Trying to get a better home theater without buying a new TV.

  1. Run video straight to TV with HDMI->DVI converter.  Run Sound form dvd to the Onk.  Good to go then.  You can set the dvd to output 1080i.  The quality will still be better thatn any dvd player you've used to date.

  2. Get an HDMI cable, then attach a DVI to HDMI adaptor to your TV set....that will deliver picture to your TV set.....

Then connect your RCA AUDIO outputs on your BD30 to the TV set's Audio inputs used for the DVI input...those are normally a "shared audio" jack that might be shared with another input, like Video 3 ....your TV instruction manual will show you how to do it.....

THEN for DOLBY SURROUND to the Onkyo, use either the OPTICAL output or the Digital Coax output (orange or black connector) on the BD30 and connect it to the Onkyo.....once you do that put a DVD in, play it and then check ALL inputs on the Onkyo to find out where the sound plays out of.....

And if you're really Tech-Savvy, you can look up the "Assigning Optical/Digital Connections" in your Onkyo manual,  and set it to the INPUT you want it "assigned" to......

  3. An HDMI cable is, in lay mans terms, a DVI cable with extra channels to carry sound as well. You will get the same high definition image with a DVI cable and an HDMI cable. With that in mind, I would suggest connecting the Bluray player to the Reciever with an HDMI cable and then connecting the reciever to the TV with a DVI cable. If your TV does not support 1080i then you will not get the best image possible. It doesnt matter how hard your receiver tries it cant force the TV to display at a resolution it doesnt support.

Here is a good tutorial i found about HDMI cables when i was looking to buy mine.

Personally, I am not a brandwhore so i bought a generic cable from the site above and it works great in my setup. I believe they have DVI as well but you might want to double check on that (i only bought an HDMI cable :) ).

    Good luck with your HD!

  4. HDMI will produce the exact video signal that DVI will. HDMI is simply a cable of convenience as it combines the audio and video into one cable. If you use DVI you will just need to use a seperate audio cable.
