I believe I made a pretty large mistake

I was supposed to charge $2.57 for a burger

they gave me a $10.00 bill. I hit "$10" on the screen

and put the bill in, but the customer noticed they had exact change

and gave me 2.57. I gave the bill back to them then.

Did I mess up? I can't seem to figure this out

And this is my first job, and my third day at the till.

  1. Your till will balance at the end of your shift. Just talk to your boss. Not like you took a bad check or anything. No biggie!

  2. nah its fine it will balance for sure. It doesnt go by hitting the ten dollar button....thats just their to help you to work it out....it wont affect your till....it will balance. i know coz i work at subway and accidently pressed that someone gave me 1000 dollars once rather than 10.00 dollars - i panicked thinking the till was going to be 1000 dollars down and told my boss, she laughed it doesnt go by the money amount you press

  3. it sounds like someone tried to short change you. I have worked at cash registers for years. When I got my first job I was always taught to shut the drawer immediatly after putting the money in. Once the money they give you is in the drawer you have to shut the drawer and open it before giving change for $1 or ANYTHING.

Several years ago I caught a short change artist in the act of trying to cheat me. I immediately called my manager in a way that the customer would not know what I was doing and let the manager finish the transaction.

Another time ( same awesome manager) a con artist waited until the manager asked me to watch the drawer while he went to the bank. The man paid for a $1.05 cup of coffee with a $100 bill. I gave him his correct change and fanned out the bills before giving them to him. He looked at the $98.95 I gave him and said "what bill did I give you?" I told him that it was a 100 then peeked in the drawer to double check, then shut it. He looked at me real sweet and said " do you mind if I buy that back?" . I told him " as a matter of fact I do" he gave me a shocked look and left. when my manager came back he told me that the same thing had happened at nearby restaurants and they got scammed.

  4. everyone makes mistakes

    dont worry

  5. I agree with Insomnia.

  6. NO, you fixed your mistake

  7. Agh!! Cash registers. I had a high school job in a retail store and the register drove me nuts. So I sympathize.

First, you're new. You're going to make mistakes. Everyone does. Tell your supervisor what happened, so they'll know why the till was short (or not) a certain amount of money. And he or she will explain how to do it the right way thenext time.

You were right to return the $10 bill once the customer handed you the correct change. The question is: did you delete the $10 from the till and enter $2.57? If not, talk to your manager and let him or her know.

There's a learning curve in every new job. You'll probably be fine. Managers realize mistakes will happen, even among experienced staff; you want to be sure they don't think you will ever try to cover something up.

    Good luck!

  8. They paid for the burger. At the end of the day you will balance out fine in the cash drawer. That's all McDonald's will worry about. You're fine.

  9. just tell your manager what happened and surely he'll understand you because all of us make mistakes no one is perfect.PEACE YO

  10. they paid for it, so no you shouldn't get fired.  I am a manager at burger king and trust me that is not a big mistake at all i still do that, because a lot of times customers change their mind after they hand you money.   Most people think that someone who works at a fast food restaurant really isn't all that bright, but man if they could only see the customers that come through, i mean it's ridiculous anyways that's another topic, but no you shouldn't even get in trouble and if u were going to, they would've said something to you at the end of your shift.

  11. Don't worry. Talk to your boss. It was just a mistake. If you were paid the 2.57, the till will balance. Good luck.

  12. No you didn't mess up. You gave him the money back and he gave you the right amount.

  13. try working somplace else if the worst happens.. i bet you could get hired somewhere else... like the movietheathre!

  14. Let me understand this: You got a $10 bill and then handed it back to them BEFORE you gave them back what would have been the change for that, $7.43, right?

If you gave them the $10 bill back and took $2.57 from them you don't need to talk to your shift manager because you didn't make a mistake.  They gave you $2.57, there should be $2.57 in the cash drawer.  It doesn't matter that you keyed in $10.00, that feature is only there to make it easy to give the correct change.

At the end of a shift or at specific times during a shift the drawers are pulled and the money is counted up in the office and put in a safe.  The drawer is then set up again for next time with a certain amount of money, say $50 or $100 so you can make change.  As long as your drawer balances out you are fine. It should contain whatever it started with plus the amount of money earned in sales.  It is not uncommon for a drawer to be slightly off, maybe even by a dollar or two.

  15. just tell your boss you made a mistake and what happened...eveyone makes mistakes, u didnt intentially do anything wrong! I dont think they'll fire you, just be truthful abou the situation.....good luck!
