  1. With some cable companys you do have to to get HD local channels but some you don't ,If you are looking to upgrade shop around some times DIRECTV or Dish Net. have good deals when your a frist time customer  here's what DirecTv has till 6/24/08

    "The Plus HD DVR Package"

*with HD programming & DVR service!

*Over 200 channels including all HD locals channels!

$54.99 for 12 months and only by calling 800-941-1301 also by useing code #001155

    *3 months of free

    HBO  (7 channels)

    STARZ  (12 channels)

    SHOWTIME  (9 channels)

  2. The only thing happening next Feb is that most over the air analog transmitters will be shut down. It has nothing to do with cable TV service.

In most areas you can already see HD over the air broadcasts for free. It's just a matter of attaching a TV antenna to your HDTV and having it scan for digital over the air broadcasts. (If you can't get good analog reception you  are probably not going to get good digital reception either.)

Some cable companies include local channels in HD with their basic package and some don't. You would have to ask your local cable company.

Or you could just wait until you get your new HDTV. Just connect it directly to your cable jack and have it scan for both analog and digital cable channels. If there are HD channels  the HDTV should  be able to find them.

  3. You won't get HD, but digital, also the digital don't mean is HD. Most likely you had to pay extra to get local HD channel usually comes with it when you buy HD cable channel, you should serious consider upgrade to HD package.  Or you could get it free local HD, if you buy a HD tv antenna which cost like 20-40. But is poinless if you do that if you had cable, you had to switch plug everytime when you wanna watch cable, just upgrade to HD.

  4. If you use a Hi Def antenna with your TV or your TV has a QAM antenna built into it, then yes.
