Will I have to pay tax if my grandpa gave me a car?

My grandpa recently gave me a vehicle that he didnt need anymore. The car is registered in Oregon but i live in washington. Im wondering if i will have to pay tax since Oregon is a no tax state.

  1. In missouri you would - I was given a car almost 6 years ago - my zada paid the tax for me though.

    Gov't doesn't let you have nothin' for free sorry!

    I gave my car to my sister (NY to NJ).  Nobody paid any taxes on that transaction.

Most States exclude sales tax between close family members.  Even if they do require sales tax, I  recommend that you issue your Grandfather a check for $1.00 (make sure he cashes it) and transfer ownership based on the $1.00 sale price.  This also avoids gift taxes if the value of the car is enough to be required to pay them
