I started cycling 8 months ago and bought a relatively inexpensive mountain bike to start on. Since then I have found that I am addicted, and that I like to stay on the roads so I put some Ritchey 26x1.4 slicks on it. The bike has a non lockable Rockshox Dart one fork on it that sucks energy badly.

I have decided to splurge a little bit and buy a non suspension hybrid with 700cc wheels, most likely a Kona Dr Dew.

My daily ride is 15 miles along the Swiss-French border at the base of the Jura mountains and there is not a lot of flat ground. In fact there is a stretch where I actually use The very lowest gear for about a 1/4 of a mile. Everyone else just gets off their road bikes and walk this stretch. I am wondering if they do this because of the gearing on a road bike, or if they don't like the sensation of their heart exploding.

Will the bigger wheels s***w me up? I am hoping to get faster times on this course with the new bike. Any knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated.

  1. a hybrid should have similar gearing ratios to a MTB. that, larger diameter wheels, less rolling resistance, higher tire psi, more efficient bike rigidity, all add-up to an easier go of it than you are presently experiencing..
