Question:

Will I lose weight if I eat vegetarian dishes only?

So, I've noticed that lately my clothes haven't been fitting right. So I assume I haven't been eating as well as normal, which is right. If I eat almost exclusive vegetarian dishes, will I lose weight?

  1. Everybody will certainly lose weight even if you are vegetarian or not as long as you take in less calories. It's always the calories that matter. Although it is a very good decision to cut back or eliminate those "bad" carbs like high fructose syrup, white sugar, milk chocolates etc it still isnt the cure for that added poundage. But I believe vegetarians "tend" to eat less oily and bad food and I think it is why some may lose weight.

Try to incorporate a variety of food. You definitely need to cut back on calories and avoid bad carbs but never cut back on whole wheat pasta or some whole wheat breads since it does good for you. Also, exercising really helps. It speeds up your metabolism and makes you livelier.

  2. Not necessarily. There can still be plenty of carbs and fats in a veggie meal.

What you need to do is cut down on foods which contain more than 4% fat (or over than 4 grams per 100 grams) and also check that you are not eating too many calories per day.

The recommended calorie intake for a female is 2000 and 2500 for a male. This can be cut down by 500 calories to help to achieve weight loss just as long as the diet is balanced well.

Take regular excersize (no need to overdo it)

Drink plenty of fluid (sometimes we mistake dehydration for hunger)

  3. when i first started i lost about 10 pounds maybe in a 2 weeks without doing anything different, but no eating meat,   after that you have to start actually working to lose more,

  4. We recently switched to an "almost" vegetarian diet (we still eat meat once a week or if we're visiting others and that's what's being served).  We've been at it almost two months now, and I don't know how much weight I've lost, but my clothes are looser!

We eat a lot of beans and tofu for protein, as well as millet.

  5. Well, it depends.  If you eat a lot of cheese and egg dishes, no, you probably won't.  If you eat a lot of stir-fry with fresh veggies and tofu/tempeh/seitan/meal starter strips, and you use lower-sodium sauces; if you eat salads loaded up with veggies and avoid creamy dressings; and if you eat lots of fruits, veggies, beans, and whole grains, you just might.  Nuts are good sources of protein, but they're also high in fat, so go easy on them.  A small handful on your stir-fry or your salad is good.

So if you're going to have a pizza, make it cheeseless and load it up with veggies.  Use whole wheat pasta instead of white and sprinkle nutritional yeast instead of cheese on it.  And use brown rice instead of white; it has more fiber.

And as long as you get enough calories, and you limit your junk food, you'll get enough protein.  Kwashiorkor is almost unheard-of in industrialized nations.

  6. dont cut the protein from your diet!!! it stimulates you metabolism which burns calories, try eating less bread, it makes you gain weight. its hard to cut from your diet all together so get some rye bread. great for you and alot safer wight wise. dont drop meat!!!

  7. If you don't add high calorie sauces made from oil, mayo or other high fatty items.

and keep the portion small to prevent over eating. Remember pasta, white rice are high in calories and are consume much more than their portion size

  8. You will lose weight if your calorie input is lower than your calorie output (to keep things simple).

Cheese pizza is vegetarian, but eating it often will likely make you gain weight.

Some vegetarians eat nothing but vegetarian junk food.

If you're following a food pyramid minus meat, you'll likely lose weight. (Just make sure to get enough protein, or the weight that is lost may not be all fat.)

  9. Not necessarily, I mean, many cheeses, crisps and pasta dishes are vegetarian too.

It depends what you eat. I presume though, that the lack of meat will cause your cholesterol level to decrease (if it's too high), so even if you don't lose weight, it's definitely healthier.

I want to add though, that if you really try, you lose fat much easier with a veggie diet, because those meats and sausages contain loads of unhealthy, saturated fat. But you should make sure that you eat a lot of protein to keep your muscles from shrinking, so you would need tofu or soy.

And exercise. PS: Did you know that food sensitivity can cause weight gain? Maybe this is the problem.

    Good luck.

  10. Vegetarianism is NOT a weight-loss plan.

Weight loss boils down to one simple thing: burn more calories than you consume.  You can certainly do that as a vegetarian and vegetarians are statistically more likely to maintain a healthy body weight than the general population, but simply cutting out meat does not automatically ensure that you're cutting calories.  Eat less, exercise more.

  11. i belive so its just that your going to need some protien during that time so unless you dont like tofu...try a different diet

  12. When I became a vegetarian about 2 years ago I lost about 50 pounds. Of course, you can't only have diet, and lose a substantial amount of weight, so I ran a mile everyday.

  13. Depends on the dish. Vegetarian dishes/foods tend to be more healthier than animal's; but there are some fattening and junk food veg dishes out there. But if you eat healthy vegan dishes and mostly stay away from the junk foods, and exercise you will loose weight.
