Question:

Will I make it through navy bootcamp with shin splints?

My personal trainer had to rework my routines to include less running or none at all because my shin splints were really hurting me. My shins would hurt even on days off of workouts. Granted, I have some weight to lose, which is why I took up boxing and got a personal trainer. It is my personal logic that as more weight comes off the less I will aggravate my shins. But I could be wrong. Am I wrong? Furthermore, I am losing weight as I want to enlist in the navy. In reading over what will happen in bootcamp they say there is running for at least 20 minutes a day. At this point, I can't. Will I have to suffer through the pain just to get through, or is there something that can help me, or... God forbid, am I SOL? Anyone? Any training or related advice or anyone else's experience is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  1. try stretching your legs everyday, ice your shins, and wear a knee brace.

  2. That's so great you want to enlist and get into shape. There're two things you're forgetting though. Ice and stretching. Ice 1-2x a day for an hour a piece. Ice for 20mins straight then 20 mins off then 20 mins off then on then off then on. Tehn wait a few more hours and if it's necessary, do it again.

To stretch you have to sit on the ground with your legs straight and have a partner put slight pressure on the inside of your feet. You push against and hold for a short amount of time and repeat that a few times. Then do it the opposite way. Have your partner put pressure on the outside of your feet and you push against.

    This should help a little.

If the pain doesn't go away within a couple weeks, it could be a stress fracture.
