You even need one now to travel between Ireland and Britain, the common travel area is no more. Reason for opting out of Shengen is gone so why is Ireland still not signed up to it is what I keep asking of politicans and they don't want to answer.

Even if you don't have immediate international travel plans, you should get one. Passport applications take weeks and weeks to process, especially new applicants.
