Question:

Will I need separate AC connection for my USB Hub?

Hi. I bought a new 7-Port USB Hub today. It comes with an AC Power-To-The-Hub supply and cable, and it can also be powered by the port on the PC. I am wondering if I should use the AC power on the hub, or just power it through the computer USB port.

I frequently use the following USB devices:

a) Wireless mouse (adapt on port)

b) Wireless USB modem (for mobile internet)

This modem warrants special attention as it seems to eat up power on USB

c) Portable HD (has its own AC power)

d) USB WebCam (Logitech)

e) USB KeyDrive / Pen Drive

f) Samsung Mobile Music Player

Basically I am worried if I am going to strain and somehow "burn out" the USB port on my notebook.

  1. When your laptop powers the USB hub, it takes the power from your laptops battery. So if your laptop is not connected to AC and running on battery, you will very soon have to recharge. So, Its a good idea to use the AC adapter for your USB hub when you are running you Laptop on battery.
