Will I need to show my Divorce Certificate to our wedding-officiant/JP?

I am on my 2nd marriage. I had to present my divorce certificate when we applied for a marriage license. We have the license now, but do I need to keep a copy of my divorce certificate handy to show the officiant of our wedding? Or do they just need to see the marriage license?

  1. You should only need your license. All the officiant needs to know is that you have permission from the court to marry, nothing more.

  2. Congratulations! I was just married 4 months ago. The only person who needed to see the divorce certificate was the licensing office.

  3. Your officiant will just want the marriage license. However, to get the license, you will need to present your certificate of divorce. It's not a bad idea to keep it handy, just in case, but your marriage license already takes into account that you are legally divorced.

  4. I should think that ANY officiant would be okay not seeing your court papers as long as you have the license.

But some of my colleagues are starting to ask for ID to make sure the people that present the license to them are the same people as the ones they're marrying.

  5. My husband was not asked to show his divorce decree on our wedding day, but was asked to when we applied for a marriage license. So, a marriage license should do it. To make sure and for peace of mind that you'll have every paper needed during your wedding, you can ask the officiant about it. Congrats!

  6. no

  7. No.  Only for getting the license in the first place.  The officiant assumes, by giving him the license, that you have already presented such info to the clerk.

  8. I dont think you will need it but it cant hurt to have it just incase!

  9. They only need the marriege license

  10. No...you wouldn't have been able to get a marriage license for your second go-around if you didnlt show the clerk or whoever issued your your license the proper documantation proving your divorce is legit...why the redundancy?...Your county/state has already given you permission to marry legally.......all they need to see is the marriage license....if they want to see the divorce certificate/decree as well I'd ask why, don't you trust your own county/state? lol.......

Been there, done that Toots...our officiate for our wedding (second marriage for both) was the town judge...all he wanted was the marriage license......good luck!

  11. Check with your officiant but they should just need the marriage license, all of the legal stuff should have been handled when you applied so all you have to do now is sign and file.

  12. NO. BUT THEY WILL WANT TO KNOW WHEN THE DIVORCE WAS FINAL
