I want to buy DSLR camera, but will I actually notice a difference between the pictures compared to my fairly good point and shoot model?

I sort of want to learn more about picture taking and being able to manually change the settings.

  1. Technically you will go from a camera (P&S) that is nearly totally automatic and has a small sensor to a camera that is fully adjustable and depends upon the photographer to tell it what to do and has a sensor that is nearly 15 times larger than a P&S cameras.

To successfully use a DSLR, you need at least some experience shooting a fully adjustable camera like a 35 mm SLR or a couple of classes in photography.

Even a word processor has to have someone at the controls to write a  successful novel

  2. Yes--basically dSLR cameras have larger sensor.

These were taken with a full frame 35 mm dSLR (Canon 5D)

  3. Yes.

You can expect the depth of field to be narrower compared to a point and shoot, which will tend to separate your subject from your background.

The shutter lag is less, meaning you'll have better luck with moving subjects.

The contrast, saturation and punchiness will probably be reduced, as P&S cameras tend to over do them.  SLR are mostly intended to do less harsh processing on the image (which is destructive to the data), allowing you to do more post processing on a computer.

You can also expect less noise/grain in an SLR, due to the larger sensor.

  4. well..your pic would look as u are dear  however it would be clearer in DSLR ..type cam.

  5. If you want to manually change settings, then a DSLR will make it easier to do.  You will then be able to take more than the average snapshots.  Whether or not you do is up to you though, and not your camera.  Go through the manual page by page, learning about every setting your camera has.  Take a class in photography.  Go to a library or bookstore and pick up books on improving your photography.  Join a photo club or other group so you can talk to other photographers.  A camera is just a tool.  You will need to learn how to use it best.  Good luck!  It sounds like you're ready to make the leap!
